Global Learning

Starts with you

You alone are the ruler of your fate. Once you realize this all the barriers fall away, and you know that anything is possible. You can know the world, know the life outside of the place you call home. You can discover who you really are apart from your culture and upbringing. Adapt, change, redefine, over and over again, and find beauty and strength in the person that remains. Experience the world. Take control of the now. It is never too late to live the life you want to live.

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT@OKI

In the Oki Straights off the coast of Japan is a group of islands known as Dozen. Since 2007, Dozen has seen its residents moving out to the mainland. As a result, the population is falling and more old folks are left behind. To arrest the population decline, the town has embarked on a series of reforms to develop the region's sustainability. Participants will be assisting in the reform efforts in local schools and develop language resources to create an online library to be used by both students and teachers. They will also learn to solve problems by working on case-consulting projects from the industries in the Oki Islands. These projects are meant to create opportunities for students to work across cultures in real business environments.

Why we do it

Why we do it

The world is flat today as cities and regions are linked via trade, technology and rapid transport. What goes on in Baghdad affects Beijing and Berkeley. China's billion-dollar development aid to Brazil, the earthquake in Nepal and the guilt admission of top international banks to financial crimes, all have impact on the new global village where everyone is a neighbor. And you, as one of the millennial generation of students, is a neighbor too to the other seven billion residents. So, how do you live, learn and prepare yourself for a career in this wide, open environment that is as promising and as scary as the American Wild West of the 19th Century?

Global competence, a hot millennial concept, has rapidly become a key concept for educators and employers. Globally competent graduates are highly desirable as they can fit well into jobs across boundaries and business domains. Global Competence is a set of multifaceted characteristics and capabilities, which can be understood by the formation of Attitude, Knowledge, Skills, and Experiences.

Only with the right Attitude, Knowledge, and Skills, are individuals truly able to learn from each new experience, reflect on past experiences, and with experience gain deep understanding and the ability to relate to an unlimited range of people and customs. Experience the world for yourself when you enroll in our range of programs and activities.

Attitude

The first tier of global competence is attitude. The foundation of attitude is a strong identity and understanding of one's own culture, further enhanced by personality attributes such as motivation to learn, open-mindedness to new or different perspectives and ways of life, and respectfulness to a wide range of people and cultures.

Knowledge

With a positive attitude and approach, one can seek and understand knowledge. This includes global awareness, competency of additional languages, and general knowledge of the world.

Skills

Individuals with the right attitude and knowledge can build on their intercultural competence, such as communicative and interpersonal abilities. A globally competence individual is able to communicate effectively and appropriately with an unlimited range of people and sociocultural situations.

Experiences

Global competence can be fostered through not only traveling, working, volunteering, or living abroad, but also even simply involving yourself in an international environment in your home town or university.

Take Their Word For It

This is what some of our students have to say

"Before my Summer Abroad at BI Norwegian Business School, the idea that I now had a point of contact in more than a dozen countries is something hard to believe. This Summer Abroad experience has essentially created new doors of opportunities for me by allowing me to mingle and connect with an international crowd." - Nicholas Kent Tann, University at Buffalo
